Swim Meet 101
When are swim meets?
Tuesday nights at 6:00pm
Home meets: Please arrive at 4:30pm
Away meets: Please arrive at 5:00pm
What do I need to bring?
Black Permanent Marker
Black Meet Swimsuit
Mudpuppies Swim Cap
Goggles
1-2 towels and dry clothes (it can get chilly early in the season, so an extra dry towel is handy)
Water bottle and snacks
Folding chairs/sports chairs (some pools will have seating and some, like ours, are BYOC!)
What should I expect at a meet?
Meets are controlled chaos! When you arrive, make sure that your swimmer checks in at the swimmers table. You can write your swimmer's name on their right shoulder with permanent marker, THEN put on sunscreen. (this helps it stick!) Some swimmers will also keep track of their swim events on their arm, which is encouraged! Heat sheets will be posted around the pool and this is where you can see what events and heats your swimmer is participating in. The order of events is as follows;
Freestyle > Backstroke >Breaststroke > Butterfly > Relay
(note: 6 & Unders do not swim relays or butterfly)
Swimmers swim youngest to oldest in each event.
Swimmers can sit with parents during the meet, but be on the lookout for our volunteer kid wranglers! They will be holding a sign by age group to help kiddos know when it's time to get lined up for their event! Once they are with their age group, clerk of course will help them get lined up at their blocks and ready to start!
Special Home Meet Rules
Plan to walk or carpool if possible.
We let our visitors park in our lot on meet days and try to keep street parking open as well. Never
park in the townhouse lots (unless that is your home, of course). Please remember that parking is prohibited within 25 feet of
an intersection, and within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. If you need help with a parking spot, many of our families are happy to share their driveways and walk together!
The Mudpuppy seating area is to the right after entering the pool and to the left behind the lanes/shallow end. Our Visitors have the large area by the deep end/diving board. Seating will be removed from the deck so bring your own chair if you plan to sit. If you do not need to supervise young swimmers, consider bringing a blanket (and bug spray) and spectating from The Hill, where the DJs will be playing our favorite hits. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited inside the fence at TSA events.
What else?!
Have a question once you get to the meet? Just ask someone at the volunteer/check-in table. We've all been new to the chaos at some point and are happy to help
Sometimes our newer Pups are hesitant to swim in the meets. That's OK! Continue to bring them. We will help encourage them to join in the fun, but they can watch and cheer on their teammates until they are ready to compete. Our team encourages all swimmers to swim in the meets and will have "Kid Catchers" who are coaches or older swimmers in the lane with your little Pup if they need that.
